League of Legends is getting its newest champion, Rell, on Patch 10.25!

Last weekend, Riot teased us with an image of what appeared to be a glowing nail and the caption “hurt someone enough, and they just might hurt you back.” Today, we know who will be doing the hurting as League of Legends’ 153rd champion, Rell, the Iron Maiden, has been revealed.

“The product of brutal experimentation at the hands of the Black Rose, Rell is a defiant living weapon determined to topple Noxus.” With that backstory, it’s easy to see why Rell has such a disdain for Noxus and, particularly, Leblanc, which is why she attacks Noxian soldiers on sight.

While what the Noxians did to Rell left her a violent maniac, it also allowed her to perfect her magical manipulation of metal. This appears to be why she rides a metal steed and carries a massive lance, making her the perfect cross between the Black Knight and Magneto from X-Men.

Riot has labeled her as a support, so let’s check out her abilities to see where the Iron Maiden might fit.

Passive – Break the Mold

"Rell attacks very slowly, but temporarily steals a portion of her target’s Armor and Magic Resist to deal bonus damage based on the amount stolen. Additionally, Rell can siphon resistances from multiple foes to grow extremely tanky."

So right off the bat from her passive, this is making me think that Rell could be a top laner situationally against tanks. Depending on her kit, she also could play as a jungler in a similar role to what Trundle served. Regardless of role, though, I think Rell is going to thrive against heavy-tank opponents and in teamfights thanks to Break the Mold.

Q – Shattering Strike

"Rell stabs forward with her lance, breaking any shields and damaging all enemies hit (damage decreases after the first target). If Rell has an ally bound with E – Attract and Repel, she and that ally recover health for each champion hit by this ability."

So the ally bind aspect is going to be a big reason why Rell will likely be a support primarily and the fact that hitting enemies with her Q grants them both a heal will be very valuable for a tank or off-tank support. Additionally, the fact that she can break shields points to her being a good anti-tank or even anti-enchanter pick. Rell also becomes the third champion in League of Legends with a shield-breaking ability (Blitzcrank’s Static Field and Renekton’s Empowered Ruthless Predator).

W – Ferromancy

Ferromancy has two different effects, depending on if the Iron Maiden is mounted or in armored form. Think of it a lot like Kled’s Q.

Crash Down (Can only cast while mounted)

"Rell leaps into the sky and transforms her mount into heavy armor, gaining a huge shield that lasts until destroyed or remounting. Upon landing, she knocks up all enemies around her. Rell can cast E – Attract and Repel and R – Magnet Storm during the transformation.Rell has increased durability, low movement speed, and a movement speed cap while in armored form. After the transformation, this ability changes to Ferromancy: Mount Up."

So, unlike Kled, Rell can control when she mounts and dismounts with her Ferromancy ability. On the “first” cast, she gains a shield and knocks everyone up, but then has low movement speed as she transforms into armored form. This is a great CC and teamfighting ability, which again indicates that she is going to be a very good support or even supportive jungler.

Mount Up

"(Can only cast while in armored form) Rell rushes forward and transforms her armor into a mount, gaining a burst of movement speed. During her next attack, she charges her target to deal bonus damage and flip them over her shoulder.Rell has increased movement speed while mounted. After the transformation, this ability changes to Ferromancy: Crash Down."

So, on the flip side, once she mounts up, she loses all that durability but gains a movement shield. And, in case you thought that knock-up wasn’t enough crowd control, she also gains a flip on her attack after mounting up. Depending on how big and low long this movement speed burst lasts, I could easily see her being viable as a jungler similar to old Volibear with this ability.

E – Attract and Repel

"Rell magnetically binds a piece of her armor to a target allied champion, granting them bonus Armor and Magic Resist while nearby.Rell can recast this spell to break the bind and stun all enemies around and between her and her bound ally."

So this is the bind ability that grants allies Armor and MR when the Iron Maiden is nearby. However, the fact that Rell can recast Attract and Repel to then stun enemies in an area also makes me think jungle is still a possibility, depending on how quickly she can cast and recast. With all the CC already in her kit on Ferromancy, if the cooldown is short enough she might have enough time to bind an ally, flip then knock up with Ferromancy, and then recast Attract and Repel to stun. Now that’s a massive CC chain.

R – Magnet Storm

"Rell erupts in magnetic fury, yanking nearby enemies toward her. She then creates a gravitational field around her, pulling nearby enemies in for a few seconds. The field doesn’t interrupt her enemies’ other actions."

How much CC does Rell have? All of it. All the CC.

This ability is nuts and is going to make her absolutely awful to play against. With Magnet Storm, Rell can easily pull in your entire team to line up a stun with Attract and Repel, then follow that up with a knock up from Ferromancy. With her also stealing tank stats from those around her and breaking shields, Rell is going to be an absolute teamfight monster.
