League of Legends: Riot Needs to Bring Back the Snowdown Map
By Josh Tyler
Fans are clamoring for Riot to bring back the winter Snowdown map.
League of Legends players love their seasonal cosmetics. By far the most popular one, though, has to be the Snowdown map that used to grace Summoner’s Rift every winter.

After a heavy dusting of snow and a frozen river, the Rift looks like a winter wonderland once the showdown starts. Baron Nashor is dressed in his finest Santa hat and the normally bright and cheery Rift is darkened, with Christmas trees dotting the pathways in the jungle.
Unfortunately, League of Legends players haven’t gotten the chance to experience the winter season on Summoner’s Rift since 2018. For two years, players have been asking Riot when they would get to see their favorite seasonal map return to the game. Yet, as recently as this July, Riot confirmed to players that the Snowdown map would not be returning to the game this year.
Their explanation, that they re-vamped Summoner’s Rift in Preseason 10 and thus they can’t simply re-use the old map skin (now that the map has walls pop up or get destroyed based on the Elemental Drake). It’s doubly understandable given the COVID-19 pandemic, which has limited their use of resources this year.
But the winter Summoner’s Rift map is still, to this day, one of the most-requested features to return, with some enterprising fans even creating workarounds to see if they can recreate the winter magic. One of the top posts on the League of Legends subreddit this week was a video reminiscing about the old winter map, so clearly there is an appetite for a return to Snowdown from the players.
At the end of a pretty bad year, a surprise trip to the snowy peaks of Summoner’s Rift would be just what the doctor ordered for League of Legends players. So, come on Riot, let us take a trip to the Snowdown to welcome us into a new year of League of Legends.
