When Misfits had a 5k gold lead at thirteen minutes and lost the game, that’s a throw. They beat themselves in the League of Legends EU LCS.

On Friday, H2K faced off against Misfits and won an incredible series, 2-0. While H2K did play a strong late game and close out the series against Misfits, Misfits shouldn’t have let it come to that. League of Legends is a game that snowballs easily so losing an early lead in pro-level play shouldn’t happen.

For context, in the EU LCS, the average gold lead at 13 minutes is 1.4k gold. Misfits had a 5k gold lead in Game 2 of the series. The first ten minutes of the game were a bloodbath for Misfits. They tore through H2K with a vengeance. Then they followed up with…nothing.

Misfits blew the biggest gold (by almost 2k) lead at 15 minutes this split. They didn’t act on their lead. Misfits gave H2K way too much slack and didn’t play their power properly. One of the hallmarks of being a pro-player is knowing when you are stronger than your opponent. Misfits didn’t seem to have the confidence in their strength to commit to a fight with H2K.

Combine that with some very bad macro play, and you have yourself a recipe for disaster. At one point, H2K were contesting Misfits for the Baron. While neither team got the Baron, H2K used their mid lane pressure to take yet another tower off of Misfits.

The biggest mistake in being ahead in League of Legends is to not keep growing your lead. If you let the 5k gold lead sit, like Misfits did, the relevance of that lead dwindles.

At 13 minutes a 5k gold lead is huge, at 45 minutes, a mid lane lead matters a lot less. You need to keep growing your lead and taking objectives before the late game arrives and levels the playing field for all.

H2K did well and fought their way back into the game. They prioritized objectives well (rightfully ignored the Cloud Drake) and fought when they thought they could win. I don’t want to take away from how hard they fought to get back into the game and win the series but when you start out that far behind, the other team certainly helped you out.
