League of Legends: 3 reasons Invictus Gaming will or won’t win Worlds
By s. samek
Why Invictus won’t win
#1 MSI Failure
After winning the 2019 LPL spring and being the defending World’s champion Invictus looked primed to win MSI 2019. It looked promising as they went 9-1 in the group only losing to SKT. They then selected to take on Team Liquid, who finished in the last playoff spot at fourth.
Team Liquid then proceeded to pull the upset of the tournament winning 3-1 to reach the finals. Invictus, as favored to win that match and the whole tournament and to finish in third/fourth, was a letdown. If you can’t finish first being a favorite at MSI, how can Invictus do it at Worlds which is a much bigger tournament, especially if you aren’t the favorites to win it all?

#2 Group D for don’t advance
Invictus Gaming was drawn into Group D with AHQ e-Sports Club and Team Liquid, while Damwon Gaming entered after winning through play-ins. This group is pretty tough if not quite “Group of Death” status.
AHQ should be an easy win for Invictus. Team Liquid and Damwon both are the underdogs to Invictus based on being rated behind Invictus on our list. Yet, Liquid beat Invictus 3-1 at MSI semi-finals and despite losing both games in the MSI group stage are tied with Invictus 3-3 in head to head games.
Damwon has plenty of star players to help them matchup against Invictus. In our Group D preview Damwon held positional advantages over Invictus in the top and middle lanes, as well as, the jungle. This might be a sign of un underrated Damwon, who could upset if you want to call it that Invictus with their higher rating.
This is another group of three good teams only two spots available for quarterfinals making it possible that it is Group D for do not advance for Invictus.
#3 Overpowered
Winning the title last year has to put a huge target on Invictus’ back. Unfortunately for them, there are plenty of talented teams ready to take shots. SKT are rated highly and have beaten Invictus before. Fnatic beat them in groups last year and are fired up to get a revenge matchup after losing to them in the finals. G2 is another team that rated higher than Invictus, who could beat them despite struggling against them at Worlds last year and MSI this year. Suddenly that fifth best ranking doesn’t seem so high.
The question is which of these powerhouse teams are going to deal the final blow to Invictus’ title defense hopes. That is also dependent on if they survive a tough group that might not seem them advance. Invictus may be good, but I feel they aren’t quite good enough when placed head to head against the favorites and highly rated teams.
Invictus starts their title defense with a nice mix of confidence and doubt. Let’s see which prevails as they take on Group D.
