TFT Beginner Guide Part 3: How to Find Your Comp
By Josh Tyler
Part 3 in our TFT Beginner Guide shows you how to figure out which comp to choose in your game.
After a brief delay, our TFT Beginner Guide has returned! Previously, we explained what TFT is at a basic level and then walked you through basic gameplay. Now, in Part 3 we will explore how you should go about finding your comp in a given match, step-by-step.
Step 1: Plan Ahead
Contrary to what most people believe, it is possible to pick a single comp before a game and do that comp without deviation. For very beginners, this is how I would recommend playing the game.
Do some research, using our tier list or champions to build comps around, and find a comp that you like. In the game, be on the lookout for the key units that go into that comp, buy them, and put them on the map as soon as you can. Level up key units, equip them with the proper items, and you can do well in most lower elos.

However, you need to know that this strategy will not always work and, in many cases, will cause you to place 7th or 8th. Many games you simply won’t get enough of the units that go into your comp (especially the key units in those comps) or you just won’t get good items to go with those units. This strategy of “forcing” the same comp repeatedly is meant to let you learn the very basics from the first two parts of the Beginner Guide and understand how a composition works together.
Once you understand comps, though, and want to start playing competitively on the ranked ladder, you can’t rely on just forcing one comp. Instead, you should have two or three comps in mind before a match begins that you can play and make the decision based on the rest of this guide.
For instance, right now on Patch 10.6 the three comps I would recommend to any player are:
- 6 Rebels
- 6 Cybernetics
- 6 Dark Star
Any of these comps can work if you have the opportunity to get them, though these comps may become weaker in future patches so make sure to keep checking in our later tier lists as the season continues. As to how to determine which of the three comps you have in mind to go, that will be determined by two factors that our Beginner Guide will outline ahead.
