3 Word Recaps
*The winning team is in bold
Game 1: FlyQuest vs. TopEsports – One sided game
It’s no surprise, as Top are one of the favorites to win Worlds 2020 and FlyQuest are widely considered to be one of the worst teams left in the tournament, but the game wasn’t close at all. FlyQuest ended the game with only one tower taken and six kills.
Game 2: Unicorns of Love vs. DRX – A big cat
The story of this game was unquestionably DRX jungler Pyosik on Nidalee, who was all over the map in the early game with a 4/0/3 scoreline and 100% kill participation at 15 minutes. He ended the game 13/1/6 including a quadra kill to help close out the game.
Game 3: Rogue vs. PSG Talon – Man, Vander’s Rakan
From Level 1, literally, Rogue’s support Vander was all over the map finding picks and starting fights. It was one of the cleanest Rakan performances you will ever see.
Game 4: Damwon vs. JD Gaming – Battle of titans
This was unquestionably the best matchup of Day 1, featuring two teams that most fans would have among the favorites to win Worlds 2020. Even though Damwon won this round, JD Gaming put up a decently close showing until Damwon blew the doors open at about the 15-minute mark.
Game 5: – Gen.G vs. LGD Gaming – LGD is back?
It was a bit curious that this was one of the closest games of the day, given the form that LGD showed in the play-in stage. Nevertheless, the 45-minute game gives pause to observers who might be wondering if Gen.G was sloppy or if LGD is returning to form.
Game 6: TSM vs. Fnatic – Many macro mistakes
The final game of Day 1 was also unquestionably the closest, with TSM and Fnatic trading punches back and forth throughout the game. Ultimately, it came down to some macro mistakes, the biggest being allowing a Baron sneak and then a botched fight before the next Baron that wound up costing TSM the game.
MVPs of Group Stage Day 1
Hong “Pyosik” Chang-hyeon (DRX, Jungle)
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Nidalee that clean, as Pyosik went deathless throughout the game (his one death came as DRX was pushing for the end) with 19 out of 22 kill participation (86.3% KP). Oh, and he also led all champions in the game with almost 900 damage per minute.
Oskar “Vander” Bogdan (Rogue, Support)
Like I said above, those engages from Vander were silky smooth. He got a lot of help from Finn, but he had the best scoreline (3/0/10) and highest KP (81.3%) of Rogue’s players.
Heo “ShowMaker” Su (Damwon, Mid)
The best player in the world, in my opinion, showed up a very solid opponent in JD Gaming’s Yagao. 6/0/11 with the third-most damage in the game (his teammates Canyon and Nuguri out-did him) on Twisted Fate helped propel Damwon to a win on Day 1 of the group stage.
