TFT: Riot Reveals Set 5, Shadow Items, New Units
By Josh Tyler
Patch 11.9 will usher in a new era of Teamfight Tactics, with Set 5: Reckoning arriving to TFT! Riot has released the first look into Set 5, including a breakdown of some of the units, comps, and the new mechanic, Shadow Items. This will replace Set 4’s Chosen mechanic as the defining change of this TFT set.
With tons of changes, some brand new Origins and Classes, let’s break down everything that’s been revealed about TFT: Reckoning!
Shadow Items
This is the brand new signature mechanic of TFT Set 5. Shadow Items will be darker versions of items, making them more powerful for the user but at a price.
For instance, Zeke’s Convergence will grant even more attack speed to those impacted by the buff, but at the cost of stealing attack speed from other units. Rabadon’s Deathcap will grant more ability power but reduce the user’s maximum health. Essentially, the Shadow Items will add a high-risk/high-reward playstyle to TFT.
Players will be able to get Shadow item components from the carousel and the armory (more on that in a second). Combining the Shadow item with a regular item makes the combined item a Shadow item, as only one Shadow item is needed to corrupt the combination. And, combining two Shadow items won’t make the item even more powerful or make it the vanilla version, it will still just create a combined Shadow Item.
Armory
The Armory is a new pop-up shop that will allow players to buy items like they buy champions. However, according to the previous Set 5 teaser, the items from the Armory may cost more than gold. And, although the Armory is initially only for the Hyper Roll mode, it may also be coming to vanilla TFT.
TFT Set 5 is bringing new Shadow Items!
5-Cost Units
Kayle
Kayle is back in Set 5 with a Reckoning. Her ascension mechanic returns, making her grow more and more powerful as she attacks. She’ll start by getting true damage, than a brief immunity, and finally she’ll drop swords on the enemies!
Teemo

The little devil is back as a 5-cost unit, but you can’t just spend 5 gold to buy him (though that is what he sells for). Instead, getting a Teemo from the shop will cost you health! His ult is going to be (surprise) annoying as hell, since he drops infernal souls near the highest attack speed enemies and when they explode they deal magic damage over time and reduce attack speed.
Viego
It’s unknown exactly how Viego works, but it appears that he can turn enemies against each other (likely after he kills them, he can get their ghost to fight for him).
Darius
Darius deals bonus damage to rival traits – Redeemed, Ironclad, Verdant, Draconic, and Dawnbringer
Garen
For Garen’s ult, he drops a gigantic sword from the sky, smashing into the ground that deals a large percent of enemy max health in damage and shreds their Magic Resist AND shields Garen for that damage!
Volibear
