After taking their fourth-straight LCS title on Sunday, can Team Liquid claim to be the best North American League of Legends team ever?

“They are the only team to ever lift the trophy back to back to back to back, and they are the greatest team North America has ever produced,” CaptainFlowers voice boomed throughout the Little Caesars arena as the Detroit crowd cheered. Before them, Team Liquid players hugged and celebrated their fourth consecutive LCS title, a second-straight year as NA’s #1 seed entering the World Championship, and their coronation as the best League of Legends team in the region ever.

Yet as I watched the confetti fall and the trophy being raised, a single thought couldn’t escape my mind: “what a load of baloney.”

More from LCS

As I watched the five-game battle between Cloud9 and Liquid for the LCS crown talking with my co-expert Ben during our live stream commentary, I continued to get the growing confirmation that whichever team won was going to have a very difficult time entering the Worlds tournament. There were mechanical gaffes, poor macro execution, inexplicable draft errors, and a style that was aggressive for the sheer sake of aggression that can be easily punished by the best teams in Europe, China, and Korea. Liquid is a good team, a great one in North America, but it has very obvious flaws.

That’s not to take anything away from Liquid, who have cemented themselves as one of the great NA dynasties as an org with their two straight years of dominance. This is a roster stacked to the rafters with talent, literally from top to bottom.

They could very easily cement themselves as the best team to ever play in the LCS. The key word there is could because in my mind they haven’t yet.
