Can Lowkey win a League of Legends Worlds Championship in 2019? Here are the top three reasons they will or won’t win it all.

Lowkey Esports is the second team to represent Vietnam at this year’s League of Legends Worlds Championship. Here’s a breakdown on three reasons why they’ll win it all or end up on the outside looking in.

Why Lowkey will win Worlds

#1 Emergence of Vietnam

Vietnam is closing the talent gap on many of the teams in the world. Gam is ready to take on all challengers and I would say Lowkey is too. Phong Vu Buffalo went before them and took a game off of G2 at last year’s Worlds. This year, Phong Vu Buffalo also qualified for the group stage event at MSI and went 2-6 to finish in sixth place. However, both of those wins came against G2.

Lowkey did beat the now renamed Dashing Buffalo in VCS 2019 Summer Playoffs losers bracket first match 3-0, even if they did fall to Gam in the semi-finals. Yet I think Lowkey is ready to prove Vietnam is better than advertised.

#2 New to the scene

Lowkey is a brand new team in international tournaments. Like many of the other challengers at Worlds, there are some unknowns about this team.

What champions, tactics, and techniques to the favor and what will we see on display from them? Fear of the unknown Lowkey can be leveraged to be an advantage on the rift. If you don’t know, how can you truly prepare?

#3 Good Draw

Lowkey got a good draw for the group stage of play-ins. They drew what I feel is the weakest team at Worlds in Mega and the weakest major region team in the LMS’s Hong Kong Attitude.

The group could be wide open to be stolen by Lowkey. That would also help them avoid most of the major favorites, like Clutch, Damwon, and Splyce in the knockouts and give them a chance to get to groups. Sadly, they can’t draw group B with Gam already in that group, or a run to the quarter-finals would be even easier.  Group D is probably their best shot with Team Liquid, AHQ, and Invictus, who look like they could be upset.

Why Lowkey won’t win Worlds

#1 Not good enough

Lowkey was only the second-best team in Vietnam behind Gam. If they can’t even top a minor region’s best team, how are they going to top a whole world?

Well, to start they need to get out of the play-in stage. With a group that includes Hong Kong Attitude and Mega are they good enough to get out of it? Lowkey is a popular pick to finish second in that group and move on.

Yet that would put them up against a group winner, like Clutch Damwon, or Splyce all upgrades in competition from their group. If they somehow survive it’s off to the main event group A, C, or D which each has a tournament favorite in it and gets way harder than the play-in stage teams. Lowkey isn’t good to get past an SKT, RNG, or Team Liquid if they make it that far.

#2 Low ranking

Also under not being good enough is having a low ranking. In our list, Lowkey came in 21 out of 24 teams at Worlds. That’s really low. That’s not winning a Worlds Championship without a lot of help ranking. If Lowkey can overcome the low rank and long odds they might go somewhere in this tournament. Conversely, if the ranking is right and they perform as expected they go home with maybe one win after play-in groups.

#3 Bottom Lane

The bottom lane is a problem for Lowkey. Both ADC and Support players for Lowkey were rated amongst the worst players at worlds. Support Bùi Nguyễn “Venus” Quốc Hoàng was rated 21st out of 24 just like his overall team. ADC  Nguyễn Phước “Celebrity” Long Hiệp was rated 22nd of 24.  This means a whole lot of getting mismatched in the bottom lane. Camp this lane hard and make them try to recover from a deficit. I don’t think they have the star power to do it.

Lowkey might be able to win a few for Vietnam, or they may crash and burn with little room to go either way. Guess the only way to know for sure is to watch them and well, for their sake, hope for the best as it could go either way.
