Why AHQ e-Sports Club won’t win Worlds

#1 Low rating

AHQ is the second lowest-rated team on our list still alive at Worlds at number 15. The only team to rank worse than that participating in the group stage is Hong Kong Attitude at number 17. If AHQ were to play up to that expectation it would result in them finishing with the worst group record than all of one team. That is very doable as they are in Group D with Damwon, Team Liquid, and Invictus Gaming, who all rated in the top 10 on our list.  At this rate, AHQ is free wins for Group D, due to being rated way lower than every team in the group by a five, or more spot margin.

#2 LMS disaster

Many consider the LMS a region in decline, despite holding three seeds at Worlds. I think this can be demonstrated by how poor of a showing the LMS has had at recent Worlds.

More from Blog of Legends

In 2018, G-Rex, Mad Team, and Flash Wolves represented the region in the group stage.  Flash Wolves had the most success going 3-3, while Mad Team and G-Rex combined to finish 0-12. That’s a 3-15 record in group play for the LMS, 17 percent win rate and that’s atrocious.

In 2017, AHQ, Flash Wolves, and Hong Kong Attitude represented the LMS. Hong Kong Attitude failed to make the group stage, losing to Fnatic, while Flash Wolves went 1-5 and AHQ 2-4 placing them in fourth place and tied for third place in their group and short of qualifying for the bracket stage.

3-9 might be a better record, but failing to get your third team out of play-ins should be a negative mark on the LMS.  6-24 over the past two years, for a 20 percent win rate is just saddening if you are an LMS fan waiting for a team to get out of groups. I don’t think AHQ bucks the trend in Group D and there is a very real possibility the go 0-6.

#3 No star power

Team Liquid has Doublelift, Invictus has Theshy, and Damwon as Nuguri, but who does AHQ have when they need a star player?

AHQ’ s support  Wang “Ysera” Tsung-Chih ranked 22nd on our list only ahead of two players. Chen “Ziv” Yi in the top lane rankings was named 18th best, Chen “Alex” Yu-Ming was named the 15th best jungler, while the ADC Tsou “Wako” Wei-Yang did rate at number-eight while mid-laner Hsieh “Apex” Chia-Wei was rated at number 13.

None of those ratings really stand out to me as Worlds class talent that will carry them to a championship.

Even if Wako is solid as an ADC, how bad is he going to be brought down by a terribly rated support like Ysera?  As a duo they also rated as the worst pure power duo in the bottom lane in Group D during our preview, making it hard to believe Wako is a genuine star player.

The other positions also struggled to stack up head to head with Group D counterparts and this roster just screams pedestrian if that.

dark. Next. Can Cloud 9 win it all at Worlds 2019?

AHQ e-Sports Club is facing an uphill battle, due to a rocky reputation from the LMS, performing poorly at Worlds. It might just be up to AHQ to change their fortune and make a deep run.
